If you want a real straight razor that is good to go right out of the box, then this is the best for you. Although it’s not the cheapest on our test, the Shave Ready has a lot of things going for it. This is a sturdy grooming accessory that offers high precision, and a close, smooth shave. With this in your shaving arsenal, you can forget about electric shavers or expensive cartridge razors. With a proper honing, a product of this type can stay sharp for months and longer!

Design and features

If you want something different when it comes to the looks of your straight razor, you will love this product. This model is all black and comes with a leather carry case and velvet bag. Other than that the design is a classic folding straight razor.

When it comes to weight, the Shave Ready is on the heavier side. Since it is all stainless steel in construction, some might not like the extra weight. Despite that, the grip itself was comfortable to use and didn’t slip, even with wet hands. Opening the box is easy, and it stays open thanks to a well-designed hinge.

For longevity, this model is made from stainless steel, Japanese ACRM-2 to be precise, and can hold an edge well. Although it is “shave ready,” meaning that you can shave with it right out of the box, we gave it a few passes on our sharpening strap just to make sure.

Some Amazon users report it being sharp enough and ready to use. This model doesn’t come with a strap for sharpening so you should get yourself a sharpener if you don’t already own one. Because of this we don’t consider it the best beginner straight razor.

This model seems to have a half hollow edge which means it is easier to hone and gives more flexibility during shaving. By contrast, a wedge-style blade is harder to work with and harder to sharpen. With a hollow edge blade, you don’t have to remove material from the entire flank to sharpen it. Finally, the stainless steel blade is 4″ in width which gives good coverage when shaving larger areas.

Our Experience

This model is another affordable straight razor, and If you’re used to shaving with one, you’ll have an easy time using the SR1. The blade holder is intuitive and clamps down on the blades so that they don’t move during shaving. We tried a few different blades, including single edge and a split double edge, and had no problems.

The Shark blades included with the SR1 managed to complete the tasks we put before them without much hassle. We tried them out with short and medium length facial hair. While using Shark blades, we didn’t notice any tugging or experience razor burn, but you can buy even better replacement blades. Shaving around facial contours felt natural with this razor, and didn’t cause any cuts. In this model’s package you get only five Shark blades, so if you don’t like them, you’ll buy new ones soon enough.

Since this grip is made out of light plastic, holding it and working with this razor felt a bit awkward. This, along with the rounded compartment edges, made pulling lines and doing details somewhat harder. The rounded design brings cuts down to a minimum, though. That’s why this can be considered the best beginner straight razor on our test.

To conclude, the Shave Ready is a mix of many positive and a few not so positive aspects. If you’re looking for a classic razor, this is the best straight edge razor for the price.

Despite it being marketed as “Shave Ready” it most often needs at least some strap sharpening. If you want to get the best out of this model, you will need to get it professionally sharpened. To maintain the edge, you should invest in a good strap as well since there’s no sharpener included with this model. We think that with this price-tag, the lack of a sharpener in the package is not a downside at all.

Once you get over these bumps in the road, we think that shaving with this razor is an enjoyable experience. If you want to move from a model with replaceable blades onto something more serious, you should consider getting it from Velvet Forge.
